  • No blocking of public access, except for special events approved by the city.
  • No loitering on bridges or in underpasses.
  • Normal rules of the road apply to the recreation paths. For instance, when approaching oncoming path users, each user shall move to his right side of the path. Passing shall be on the left side of the path.
  • Pedestrians should be given right of way by other users of the paths to ensure them safe passage.
  • An audible warning is required from operators of golf carts, bicyclists, and skaters when approaching pedestrians from the rear.
  • All laws and ordinances relative to alcohol, including open container laws and driving under the influence (DUI), that apply to traffic on the streets also apply to the paths and will be strictly enforced.
  • Litter must be deposited in receptacles along the paths or retained for proper disposal later. Littering on the paths is subject to fines and penalties twice that for littering on the streets.

Pets & Path Courtesy

  • Make sure animals are properly restrained – normally well-behaved pets can be frightened by golf carts, bicycles, or rollerblades and react unpredictably
  • Clean up after pets along the paths, and do not let pets relieve themselves on private property. Please extend the same courtesy to property owners adjacent to the paths you would expect on your property.
  • Make sure pets on extending leashes are not blocking the path for other users.
  • Pet owners can be held legally and civilly liable for any injuries caused by their pet.

Golf Carts - Registration Required

  • LSMVs (low speed motor vehicles -  4-wheeled motor vehicles whose top speed exceeds 20 mph but not 25 mph) must be registered at the Fayette County Tag Office
  • Gasoline carts may not be registered unless inspected and certified by a Peachtree City golf cart dealer. Gasoline carts must be recertified every two years or registration shall be void.

Golf Cart Safety

  • Golf carts should be operated with the same caution as exercised in operating a car. Golf cart owners can be held criminally and civilly liable for acts committed on their carts. Violations on a golf cart can affect a drivers’ motor vehicle license.
  • All persons must be seated while cart is in motion.
  • No one may sit in the driver’s lap while cart is in motion.
  • Young children should sit flat in the seat and wear safety helmets while the cart is in motion to avoid injury from falling or being thrown from the cart.
  • All operators must abide by all traffic regulations applicable to vehicular traffic.
  • Slow down when approaching other path users, curves, or intersections.
  • Use caution when crossing streets or driveways - stop cart if automobiles are approaching.
  • Use a HORN or other audible signal when approaching pedestrians from behind -- electric carts are very quiet and can seriously injure pedestrians.
  • Where cart paths exist they must be used instead of parallel city streets (excluding private golf course paths).
  • Carts driven at night must be equipped with functional headlights and taillights.
  • Carts are not allowed on or across Hwy 54, Highway 74, Peachtree Pkwy, or Crosstown Road except at authorized crossings.

Golf Cart Insurance

Most homeowner insurance policies do not cover golf carts off the homeowner’s property. This can be a significant liability to golf cart owners involved in accidents. Golf cart insurance is inexpensive and offered by local insurance companies. Golf cart owners are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to obtain liability insurance.

Additional LSMV Rules

  • All LSMVs must be registered with the Fayette County Tag Office.
  • All LSMVs must be insured according to state law.

  • State law permits LSMVs to operate on streets with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or lower.

Rights-of-Way & Easements

Right-Of-Way Use - The city owns a right-of-way extending approximately 10 feet from the curb of all public residential streets. This area is used for utility lines. Landscaping items should not be placed in the right of way, and may be damaged if utility or street repairs are necessary.

Easements - Many residential properties have utility or drainage easements. Any plantings, fences or retaining walls located in or across these easements may be damaged or removed during easement or utility maintenance at the owner’s expense.

Sprinkler Systems - Residents installing underground irrigation systems must obtain a permit from the Peachtree City Building Department. Irrigation systems should not be placed in the City-owned right-of-way or in easements. Call 770-487-8901.

Fire Hydrants - No shrubs may be located within three feet of the back side of a fire hydrant or within ten feet of either side of the hydrant. No shrubs are permitted between a hydrant and the street. Each year the accessibility of hydrants is assessed by the Fire and Public Works departments. Shrubs within the proscribed zone should be relocated or they may be removed.

Call Before You Dig - For the general safety of residents and contractors, utilities must be located before a project requiring digging is undertaken. Call 1-800-282-7411 or 770-623-4344. Locates should be in place three days after calling.

Greenbelts, Buffers & Trees

No Dumping in Buffers or Greenbelts - Dumping of yard debris in greenbelts is prohibited. Yard debris should be taken to the City Recycling Center.

No Clearing in Greenbelts - Clearing vegetation from greenbelts and watershed protection buffers is prohibited. Buffers protect Peachtree City’s lakes, streams and wetlands, and the natural vegetation within these areas provides an area for the filtration of sediment from runoff water. Clearing native plants or planting grass reduces the lands ability to filter the runoff water and increases the water’s flow rate, endangering the watersheds.

Removing Trees Requires Permit - Removing any tree larger than three (3) inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground requires a permit before the work is started. Permits are free and may be obtained from Code Enforcement at the Developmental Services offices or online through the Velo-City section of the website. Protected specimen trees (any deciduous canopy tree 15 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground; any evergreen tree 18 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground; and any understory tree four (4) inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground) may require a State Certified Arborist approval prior to receiving approval from the City. All tree removals must be done by either the homeowner personally or a City approved contractor. Contact Code Enforcement at 770-487-8901 for more information. A permit is not required if a tree sustains serious irreparable damage and constitutes an immediate hazard to human life or property.

The Recycling Center accepts corrugated cardboard, magazines, newspapers, aluminum beverage cans, grass clippings, leaves and tree limbs and trunks, 3" to 12" diameter, 4’ maximum length. Nuisance Complaints are filed by the resident with the Court Clerk (City Hall). The petitioner and the defendant present their case in Municipal Court. If judged a nuisance, the defendant must abate the nuisance.

Unsanitary Conditions - The Fayette County Health Department investigates and enforces regulations on unsanitary conditions such as animal enclosures, garbage, insects and rodents. Call 770-631-0743 ext. 150 to report concerns about unsanitary conditions.

Emergencies & Disasters

Call 911 - Peachtree City's Fire, EMS and Police Departments can all be reached for emergencies by dialing 911.    Fayette County operates the 911 Communications Center.

Communications Failure - In the unlikely event of failure of the Fayette County 911 system or a failure of the telephone system, residents who have emergencies that would normally require dialing 911 may go to one of the four Peachtree City Fire Stations: Neely Sta. 82 - 105 N. Peachtree Pkwy; Leach Sta. 81 - 100 Paschall Rd Satterthwaite Sta. 84 - 451 Crabapple Ln; Weber Sta. 83- 481 S. Peachtree Pkwy.

Disasters - Peachtree City has a disaster plan in place to address many types of natural or industrial disasters. Certain situations, such as tornado damage or a chemical spill, might necessitate evacuating an area of the city. Hazardous materials release could also require that residents "Shelter In Place," which means remaining or going into a protective structure such as a home or business, closing all doors and windows, and turning off all air conditioning and ventilation systems that bring in air from the outside. This provides protection from the hazardous material until it has dissipated.  Residents in a disaster area would be instructed whether to Shelter In Place or to evacuate the area. In the event of an evacuation, a designated reception center would be established until the disaster situation was abated.

Information Sources - In the event of a natural disaster or community-wide emergency, The City of Peachtree City has several sources to broadcast information to residents. Emergency bulletins and weather-related closings will be broadcast on WSB AM 750 and B-98.5 FM radio stations. Depending on the nature of the emergency, notices may be placed on Comcast Cable Channel 26, and on this web site.  Peachtree City also has access to an automatic-dialing alert system that calls a specified geographic area of telephone numbers (does not call unlisted numbers).
